Browser-Update Campaign

Campaigns against outdated browsers, especially Internet Explorer 6, which has been stubbornly...

Still, too many users on the Internet are using outdated browsers and are exposing them to unnecessary risks. One of the oldest browsers is the Internet Explorer 6 (IE6), which currently is still used frequently.

The IE6 is almost eight years old and hardly supports current web standards. Many web pages are displayed completely different than intended by the web designer and, therefore, drive many web designes crazy. I myself have gained many negative experiences developing web pages for the IE6. Besides the lacking support of certain web standards, the IE6 turns out to be a high security risk for the user.

Since several months, many sites are raising showing up a small hint informing the user about his outdated browser. The aim is to explain the user that he should upgrade his browser as soon as possible. Today, many alternatives are available for free all over the net, not least even from the manufacturer of the IE6 itself. Unfortunately there are many unjustified predjudices against the IE7 or IE8, which -in my opinion- are no reason for not using a current (and thus safer) browser.

This is why I have decided to show a little note notifying the visitor that his browser is obsolete when such a browser is detected. Alternatively, web site operators can make use of free services, instead of implementing an own solution.

The initiative Browser Update offers free JavaScript code, which can be integrated easily into your own web page. The initiators of this service hope that their service will awake the interest to update the borwser. To achieve this goal, web site operators should participate in this project or implement own solutions.

Another, much bigger initiative is IE6: Do NOT want! and was raised by some norwegian website operators. This procedure does not make the use of JavaScript providing a similar function.

From today on my Website owns a new design. Unlike the previous one, this design was not created by me, it was created by my fellow student and friend Marion Fraikin. I want to thank him at this point for his work.

As in the previous design, I present some impressions from many different places and events of time in the head area of this Homepage. The combination of the pictures is generated just-in-time for each visitor by the server using pictures chosen randomly out of a pool of different pictures. The picture is then kept during the whole time of visit. Between sunset and sunrise of the visitor's location the pictures are shown in sepia brown colors.

Because of the little size of this Website I decided to deactivate the search tool.

I would be very pleased to get some feedback like suggestions, comments or even error reports by email or even by the contact form.

Seminar finished

Yesterday I finished my seminar entitled "Convergent Networks" at the Chair of Computer Science 4...

Yesterday I finished my seminar entitled "Convergent Networks" at the Chair of Computer Science 4 of the RWTH Aachen University giving a final presentation. The topics were attended in groups of two students each.

Our topic, which I worked on together with my fellow student David Haase, dealt with the customization of services in a converged network. The current development in the telecommunications industry means that in the next few years, the various networks (analog / digital, mobile, xDSL, wireless ,...) will be merged together into a single network. Services should be used by the user in a simple way regardless of its location and its terminal used. To achieve this, new mechanisms for individual adjustment of services have to be developed. In our written composition we will give a survey of the elaborated models of a Next Generation Network, different negotiation techniques working at the transport layers, and different customization techniques working at the service layer.

You can find the paper in English language amongst others here.

You can find more information regarding this document at my Projects page.

Attention: The file is only accessible from within the network of the RWTH University. Requests from outside need a special login. In order to obtain login information, please contact me here.

After nearly a year of planning and implementation, I have finally finished the site of my former school. Starting next week they are presented in a new design and new functionality. In fact, the design of the page isn't new, because the school has chosen to use the same design as the Association "Verein der Ehemaligen des Gymnasiums Kreuzau e.V.". This is intended to close a gap between the high school and the associated clubs.

Finally, it is planned to integrate the Website of the friends of the school also into the same management interface. When this will be, however, is still not clear.

In the Newspaper

How would you feel, if you flip the newspaper open and unexpectedly you discover your own photo?...

When I was attending this morning the first lecture as usual, my friend Mario pointed out that a photo showing me was printed in the newspaper. Fortunately, the article didn't deal of me but about the current strike at the railway. Therefore, I was only coincidentally in the newspaper.

A quick online search took me directly to the online edition of the newspaper.
